The Chapel of Perpetual Adoration

Perpetual devotion to the Blessed Sacrament

According to the 1822 inventory, this chapel was known as La Capilla del Alumbrado — the Chapel of Perpetual Light — due to the continuous exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It is described with a small dome, and inside stood the pyramid altarpiece carved in 1749 by Felipe de Ureña, originally made for the main altar.

The image of the Sacred Heart presides over the most important sacramental element of the Church: the Eucharist. The history of this image traces back to the revelations of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, but its devotion in Mexico — and specifically in Durango — became established during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a symbol of comfort and hope.

The Dome and Its Paintings

The baldachin stands beneath a minor dome whose pictorial decoration elevates the aesthetic and spiritual experience of the chapel. The paintings, by renowned artist Margarito Vela, adorn the pendentives and vault with angelic figures that seem to guard the Eucharistic mystery.

Liturgical function

The liturgical function of the altar is completed by two tabernacles — one frontal and one posterior — designed to house the Sacred Eucharistic Host, ensuring this space is above all a place of real and constant divine presence.
