The Major Historic Organ

The cathedral preserves in its upper choir one of the most important collections of tubular organs in northern Mexico. The Major Organ, built in 1769 by renowned organ builder José Padilla, consists of hundreds of lead and wooden pipes fed by large leather manual bellows. Its gilded baroque facade houses the battle trumpetry, which projects air horizontally to create a brilliant and imposing sound.
The Plainchant Facsimiles

Music was not only performed, but also safeguarded in monumental manuscripts. The central lectern of the choir housed giant Choir Books, with square notation scores hand-drawn on sheepskin parchments. Their decorated and color-illuminated capital letters combined graphic art with Sunday liturgy, allowing the entire chapter to sing the corresponding psalms in unison.
